Tolhurst – Goth: A History (Buch)

Der Mitbegründer und Drummer von The Cure, Lol Tolhurst, hat 2023 eine ‘Geschichte der Gothic-Bewegung’ – im Original: Goth. A History – vorgelegt. Das, obwohl er von sich im Nachwort sagt, er sei kein Historiker, er habe das Vorhaben, eine ‘comprehensive encyclopedia’ zu schreiben, aufgegeben.
Daher ist in meiner Wahrnehmung ein Großteil des Textes eher im Plauderstil geschrieben, wo ich mir manchmal doch mehr “encyclopedia” gewünscht hätte.

In diesem Sinne zitiert er auch öfter Dr. Tracy Fahey, die er als “Goth historian” bezeichnet, greift also auf deren Erkenntnisse und Einschätzungen zurück. „Tolhurst – Goth: A History (Buch)“ weiterlesen

Summer is the gothest time?

‘postpunkonline’ hat auf Insta gepostet: “summer is actually the gothest time of the year, because it is the time that we goths suffer the most, which is goth”

Schmunzelnd habe ich das für mich erstmal mit “nö” kommentiert… 😉

Ich merke, daß bei einem solchen Thema die sprichwörtlichen zwei Herzen in meiner Brust schlagen. Zur Erklärung: ich kenne aus meiner Kindheit, aus Familienurlauben vor allem die Nordsee – und damit das Wetter-Poker: entweder wirklich warm oder zwei Wochen mit viel Regen – sprich: “Sommerurlaub im Ostfriesennerz”.
Später, in den 90ern, war ich mehrfach in Schweden im Urlaub – bei gleichen Wetterbedingungen. Ich erinnere mich an eine Woche bei durchgehend knapp 30°C, aber doch eher an tagelangen Regen – im Hochsommer, verbunden mit der alles durchdringenden Feuchtigkeit, dem modrigen Geruch von Zelt und Rucksack im Auto usw. Goth vs Postpunk

Ich möchte auf einen sehr interessanten Artikel von “The Blogging Goth” hinweisen, der mit “Goth needs to defend its territory” betitelt ist. Der Autor weist darauf hin, daß Goths das gerade wieder sehr aktuelle Label “Postpunk” zurückweisen und “ihre” Musik als GOTH reklamieren sollen.

“Why does any of this matter, you might ask yourself, because who cares about labels? I’d argue it matters because if Goth is to have a future as a music subculture rather than a fashion label for how people dress, it needs to claim its own music back and start identifying its own influence on other subcultures.”

Nachtrag: Ja, ich hatte keinen Kommentar geschrieben, weil ich das schnell während der Arbeit gepostet habe. Ich stimme dem Autor zu: Goth muß mehr sein als Mode und Schminke. Und ja, ich höre seit 2-3 Jahren auch ganz viel zu ‘Postpunk’, der ja gerade sowas von in sei. Das ist zum Teil richtig gute Musik, aber es ist auch richtig, daß das nicht unbedingt als ‘goth’ gelabeled wird. Der Autor erwähnt Lebanon Hanover – die müsse die Gothic-Szene als ‘goth’ vereinnahmen. Aber: sagte die Band nicht, daß sie sich gerade nicht als Gothic versteht? Man kann niemanden vereinnahmen, der das nicht will. Aber man kann sehr wohl das Label Goth neben ‘Postpunk’ und andere stellen. Doch wer soll es tun? Wer, wenn der Nachwuchs in der Gothic-Szene eher ausbleibt? Daher ist das eine gute Forderung, an deren Umsetzung es wohl scheitern wird.

Tolhurst – Goth. A History (Buch)

Spät in der vergangenen Nacht erreichte mich die Abbuchungsmitteilung über 14€ und der Hinweis von Amazon, das Kindle-Buch sei nun verfügbar; ich hatte es vorbestellt.

Dieses Werk, das eine Geschichte der Gothic-Bewegung schreiben will, ist nun das dritte in diesem Jahr – neben Unsworth und Robb’s The Art of Darkness – The History of Goth.

Schon die “Author’s Note” gleich nach dem Vorwort nimmt mich als Leser in den Bann:

Before Goth there was anarchy and the mystery of anarchy begat Goth. (…) From The Doors (of perception) to The Cure and further I’m searching for the essence that has always resonated with dark seekers. Some identify als Goths, others do not; but we are all the same tribe. These are my people.

Oder wenige Seiten später:

Punk came and kicked down the doors and strangely let in the light so the black heart of something like Goth could exist. (…) Goth is not really a subculture I’ve come to understand. It’s a way to understand the world.

Das, Frau Unsworth, ist der Schreibstil, der mich ‘gripped’, mich anfaßt, mich eintauchen läßt. Aber ich kann ehrlicherweise jetzt nicht viel mehr sagen, weil ich nun einen Arbeitstag vor mir habe und das Buch bis 5% angelesen habe. Mehr also später in einer Rezension.
