Gothic – 3 Bücher

Ursprünglich wollte ich die drei folgenden Bücher jeweils einzeln vorstellen. Dann fiel mir auf, daß sie sich letztlich so ähneln, daß es eher Sinn macht, sie gemeinsam, aber in ihren Unterschieden vorzustellen.

Im Deutschen wie im Englischen gibt es Buchserien, die ein Thema möglichst knapp vorstellen wollen. Es gibt die Serie “in einer Stunde” oder auch die umfangreichere Beck-Wissen-Reihe. Im Englischen existiert “A Very Short Introduction” – und als Teil davon “The Gothic” von Nick Groom, ein Bändchen unter Din-A5-Größe, textfokussiert, wenige Bilder, immerhin Carl McCoy. 😉 Gothic – 3 Bücher weiterlesen

Tolhurst – Goth: A History (Buch)

Der Mitbegründer und Drummer von The Cure, Lol Tolhurst, hat 2023 eine ‘Geschichte der Gothic-Bewegung’ – im Original: Goth. A History – vorgelegt. Das, obwohl er von sich im Nachwort sagt, er sei kein Historiker, er habe das Vorhaben, eine ‘comprehensive encyclopedia’ zu schreiben, aufgegeben.
Daher ist in meiner Wahrnehmung ein Großteil des Textes eher im Plauderstil geschrieben, wo ich mir manchmal doch mehr “encyclopedia” gewünscht hätte.

In diesem Sinne zitiert er auch öfter Dr. Tracy Fahey, die er als “Goth historian” bezeichnet, greift also auf deren Erkenntnisse und Einschätzungen zurück. Tolhurst – Goth: A History (Buch) weiterlesen

Tolhurst – Goth. A History (Buch)

Spät in der vergangenen Nacht erreichte mich die Abbuchungsmitteilung über 14€ und der Hinweis von Amazon, das Kindle-Buch sei nun verfügbar; ich hatte es vorbestellt.

Dieses Werk, das eine Geschichte der Gothic-Bewegung schreiben will, ist nun das dritte in diesem Jahr – neben Unsworth und Robb’s The Art of Darkness – The History of Goth.

Schon die “Author’s Note” gleich nach dem Vorwort nimmt mich als Leser in den Bann:

Before Goth there was anarchy and the mystery of anarchy begat Goth. (…) From The Doors (of perception) to The Cure and further I’m searching for the essence that has always resonated with dark seekers. Some identify als Goths, others do not; but we are all the same tribe. These are my people.

Oder wenige Seiten später:

Punk came and kicked down the doors and strangely let in the light so the black heart of something like Goth could exist. (…) Goth is not really a subculture I’ve come to understand. It’s a way to understand the world.

Das, Frau Unsworth, ist der Schreibstil, der mich ‘gripped’, mich anfaßt, mich eintauchen läßt. Aber ich kann ehrlicherweise jetzt nicht viel mehr sagen, weil ich nun einen Arbeitstag vor mir habe und das Buch bis 5% angelesen habe. Mehr also später in einer Rezension.

Unsworth – Season of the Witch (Buch)

Cathi Unsworth beschreibt sich selbst als Goth und hat das Ziel, in ihrem “The Book of Goth” untertitelten Werk die Entstehung der Gothic-Bewegung aus den bleiernen Jahren der Thatcher-Regierung zu erklären. In der Buchbeschreibung auf Amazon heißt es:
“Now, forty years since its inception, author Cathi Unsworth provides the first comprehensive overview of the music, context and lasting legacy of goth.
